Mr Smith has been called the unofficial storyteller of Australia’s experience in Afghanistan — his song Sapper’s Lullaby is engraved in marble at the Australian plot in the British War Cemetery in Kabul.
In 2020, Mr Smith returned to Afghanistan and worked at Kabul International Airport during Australia’s mission to evacuate passport and visa holders when Kabul fell under Taliban control.
The show offers a vivid personal account of Australia’s 20-year involvement in Afghanistan and marks the culmination of what has been a remarkably sustained piece of storytelling on Australia’s longest war.
Despite the many challenges during the evacuation mission, the Australian team managed to evacuate 4100 people, most of whom are now living in Australia.
“We’ve changed people’s lives,” Mr Smith said.
“This is a story worth telling.”
The concert is a rare opportunity for the local community to experience Mr Smith’s unique storytelling and music.
Additionally, on Sunday, May 21, from 10am to 11.30am, there will be a workshop called ‘Storytelling with Songwriting’ with Mr Smith.
The workshop will allow participants to work with Mr Smith to hone their storytelling and songwriting skills.
The profits from the concerts will support Indigo Foundation and Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia.
Ticket prices for the concert are $40 for general admission and $15 for concessions, while the workshop tickets are $25.
Tickets for the concert can be purchased at Trybooking.com/CGSTM, and tickets for the workshop can be purchased at Trybooking.com/CHXQJ.
