Bre Flanagan's charges held the Hawks at bay for much of Saturday's clash before eventually posting the 38-23 win.
“We probably should have won by a bit more,” Flanagan said.
“We had a big second quarter and were able to swap the combinations around a bit after that.
“We've got everyone back from injury now, so we're just trying to work out what works best for us on the court.
“We're a pretty flexible side, but at the same time you still want to find out what your best combinations are.”
Indianna Frauenfelder was again among Mulwala's best performers.
“Indi has had some really good games for us,” Flanagan said.
“She's fitting in well.”
The rest of the round was headlined by dominant victories to top teams.
Deniliquin managed a massive 87-28 triumph against Cobram, Rumbalara scored 75 goals to Congupna's 27 and Moama defeated Finley 67-34.
Tongala also had a strong win against Echuca United, tasting victory 55-23.
“Our defenders have brilliant for us so far this year,” Tongala coach Paige Wade told the Riverine Herald.
“They've always come out and performed really strongly for our side, and we were really pleased that they were able to do it again.
“Liv Taverna was excellent until she hurt her shoulder, but it appears she is going to be fine, so we will continue to see her contribute to the side.
“And Millie Brock was strong in goals again, which always makes a big difference in the way we play.”
Nathalia had a bye due to Numurkah's top side dropping back to B-grade.
The Blues applied to the league at the start of the season for an exemption to not field an A-grade outfit.
While it was denied, a review was scheduled for after round three.
Following the review the board has allowed the club to drop down to B-grade.
