Herbs for cooking and wellbeing, a bike track and a water feature will all be included in the garden, which has been envisioned as a "calm and welcoming space" for Goulburn Valley families.
The Family Haven, at Mooroopna's Young St, was established as a safe space for parents, carers and young children to gather, make friends, play and share a meal.
Situated in the former Ardmona Canteen, the site is owned by the St Alban’s Anglican Church, who is "thrilled" by the latest developments at the garden patch.
Renowned landscape gardeners Michael Hatton of Michael Hatton Landscapes and Karen Sutherland of Edible Eden Design have joined forces to design the garden.
Upon its completion, the space will be home to a lawn swing area, a gravel pathway, a sunken sandpit, a sensory garden and various mounds with native varieties.
Mr Hatton said the garden would be a fun, relaxing and welcoming space for children, parents and carers all year round.
“Lighthouse explained to us that some of the families attending the Family Haven do it tough with life circumstances including poverty and insecure housing preventing them from having a garden of their own,” he said.
“Hopefully this garden becomes a place to call home.”
Family Haven coordinator Courtney Wilson said the garden would be a profound transformation from the current makeshift yard children and families had been attempting to use until now.
“We won’t know ourselves,’’ she said.
“This will be a wonderful, safe, welcoming and fun place for our families.’’
