The Kolety Landcare Group in charge of the lagoons project will guide the students through the process, while also continuing with lessons at and maintenance of the lagoon system running through town.
Group member and renowned ecologist Dr John Conallin said programs completed as part of the partnership are usually focussed on the river in the cooler months, when the river is low.
“The revegetation of reeds along the Edward River’s banks, especially in the ski zones and after the flooding, is one of the bigger projects we’re working on this year,” Dr Conallin said.
‘The idea is that these plantings will reduce further erosion.
“That will continue while the river is low.
“General maintenance of the lagoons will also occur, and come spring we’ll start looking at more fish monitoring.
“There are also plans for some construction projects, including habitat projects, for later in the year.”
High school students actively participate in Landcare Group projects each Wednesday during the school term.
This week, Year 10 students joined Dr Conallin at the Werrpanakata Fish Park to test water quality samples against drinking standards and ideal conditions for fish.
