The Edward River local government area is home to a thriving dairy industry, powered by 15 dedicated family-owned farms.
Together, these farms milk an impressive 20,000 cows, producing around 130 million litres of milk annually.
Blighty farmer and Murray Dairy board chair Rachael Napier said this translates to a farm gate value of $91 million.
She said these farms directly employ 200 people in the region, with about $16 million paid in wages.
“Dairy farming in Edward River is a year-round commitment, with operations running 365 days a year,” Ms Napier said.
“This consistency provides stable employment and supports a resilient local economy.
“The region’s farmers employ a variety of farming systems, allowing them to adapt to challenges such as drought and water shortages.
“The community boasts a healthy mix of both young and experienced farmers, creating a dynamic and supportive environment.
“Their shared philosophy is simple yet powerful: treat every cow like she’s your only cow.”
With just one ingredient, milk remains one of the most natural and essential foods in our diet.
But beyond being a breakfast staple, Ms Napier said milk is far more versatile than many realise.
“Not only is milk available how you buy it for your cereal and coffee, but it is used as an ingredient in literally thousands of products.
“This includes in a powder form to help the flavouring stick to Twisties, and milk protein soaked bandages to expedite the healing process.
“It really is a super food. A cup of milk contains roughly the same amount of calcium as six cups of cooked broccoli.”
This World Milk Day, take the time to consider how the Edward River dairy industry is not only nourishing the nation but also sustaining a proud and passionate rural community.
