Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content A keen fisherman, Mr Smerdon has loved fishing but struggled to achieve the main goal — catching a fish. His wife Perri Connell said he was starting to become so despondent about his lack of success, he was close to chucking it in. “He even said during the week he would sell his boat if he didn't catch anything,” Mrs Connell said. On Sunday, July 11, at 9 am it all changed. Mr Smerdon had been on the water at Torrumbarry Weir with a friend for about an hour when his luck finally changed. Not only did he catch a fish, it was a whopper Murray cod. The fish measured at 110 cm and was by far the largest fish Mr Smerdon had caught. After releasing the cod back into the water and returning home, Mrs Connell said her husband celebrated with a couple of beers. And the boat is ready for its next trip on the river. By Nicole Thomson
