More than 60 people from all walks of life gathered at Corowa Community Garden recently for the launch of Come Sit A While – Living Library, sharing stories, making new friends, gaining insights into different cultures and learning about community opportunities.
The initiative of Intereach’s Settlement Engagement and Transition Support program has proved so popular, it has become a fortnightly event.
SETS multicultural worker Magdalena Rooney said it was about creating a welcoming space where new arrivals and existing community members felt they belonged.
“A place where people, particularly those who may be feeling socially isolated, can come together, sit a while and have good conversation over a cuppa and good food,” Magdalena said.
“It’s also an opportunity to learn more about the people who make up Corowa, and how to get involved in volunteer opportunities and community projects of interest.”
Local organisations, including Rotary, the Men’s Shed, and Uniting Church, joined in to share what they do and how to get involved, while participants enjoyed playing fun Australian games like the egg toss and wheelbarrow race.
SETS provides free settlement support for newly arrived migrants and refugees so they can become independent and contribute to the Australian community.
Across the past year, the Intereach SETS team has supported more than 1100 people through group work, case management and community events that break down barriers and foster inclusion.
“Many migrant workers are in Australia without the support of their family,” Magdalena said.
“The Come Sit A While project supports their wellbeing outside of the workplace and encourages community participation.”
And the feedback speaks for itself, as participants reported feeling more connected to their community and excited about future events.
One person said: “Now I don’t need to feel lonely or bored on a Saturday” while another shared: “This day has helped me to settle more in my community”.
Magdalena said Corowa had shown it was a community that embraced people with open arms.
“Corowa is a great place to raise a family and some migrant workers are looking to explore pathways to having their families here which is great,” she said.
