But he’s perfectly fine with that.
Especially when his two horses continue to produce shock results.
On Sunday at St Arnaud, Pearson’s King’s Hand overcame 26/1 odds to win the $15,000 Nutrien AG Solutions St Arnaud BM52 Handicap.
The race was a battle of the outsiders as the first four paid a huge $12,260.20.
The eight-year-old gelding set the pace in the early running in the 1200 m run, battling it out with Jocks for prime position.
And when the field hit the top of the straight it was simply down to the leading pair to fight it out for the win.
A bob of the head proved to be decisive for the Pearson stable as King’s Hand won for the first time in almost a year.
“The benchmark 52s are his cups of tea,” Pearson said.
“It was only his second run following an 11-week spell, it was good to see him perform so strongly.
“My horses are only bush battlers and I know they’re not going to go to Melbourne and win the major races.
“But they give me something to work with and I really enjoy that.
“King’s Hand will probably run at Echuca on Melbourne Cup Day next.”
And on Monday at Echuca, Pearson’s four-year-old gelding Praetor almost caused a massive boilover in the Echuca Moama Print and Design Maiden Plate.
Having been named as the fifth emergency after acceptances, Praetor eventually got the call up.
But bookies had him making up the numbers as he was rated as a $128 chance.
Pearson would eventually get more than he bargained for — he admits he was only attracted to the horse because he was “cheap” — as Praetor finished second.
“I was rapt with his performance,” he said.
“It was only his second run for me. Before coming to my stable he was with Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.
“I’ll only use him to poke around the bush and hopefully we can have a little bit of success.”
