Owners Kate and Matt Halpin purchased the freehold at 90 Main Street Rutherglen in mid-2021 and following a complex permit application process through Indigo Shire Council, the project has been granted the green light with excavation and demolition works now underway.
Designed by Porter Architects of Ballarat, with construction by Hotel Renovations and Maintenance of Melbourne, the reinvented venue will feature trans-seasonal dining zones for 150 plus guests, expansive open-air beer garden, meeting and events facilities and boutique accommodation for business and leisure travellers.
Phase one of works includes extensive structural, mechanical, civil, electrical, and hydraulic engineering efforts to ensure the integrity of the site. The result will see extensive remodelling of the interiors external spaces and facade to reflect contemporary tastes, while conserving the heritage significance and sense of place the late 1800s hotel occupies within the region.
Recently awarded a $500,000 grant via the Victorian Government's Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund. The Victoria Hotel will play an integral role in drawing new visitors to the border and northeast.
“Our vision is to create a destination venue in the heart of the region, which can serve as a launching pad for travellers to explore Victoria's renowned High Country, or as a convenient meeting point for travellers between Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney,” owner and venue director Kate Halpin said.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the community warmth and support we've received for The Victoria since we arrived in Rutherglen in mid-2021. We intend to create a place that not only draws visitors to experience the unique Rutherglen village and wider surroundings but also reinvent a landmark which instils a sense of pride among the local community.
“We are inspired by the growing number of other like-minded operators who are contributing to Rutherglen's emergence as a gourmet food and wine, arts and culture, and cycling tourism destination and we are committed to working together to grow the profile of the Rutherglen brand within new visitor segments.”
The Victoria Hotel is set to open in mid-2023. To follow the progress of the redevelopment, please visit @thevictoriarutherglen on Facebook and Instagram.
