With a true passion for their work, owners Kasey and Matt Hilliard are only too happy to offer advice on sustainable home gardening.
“The store itself isn’t geared toward making mass profits, but more toward community and how we can service that community,” Kasey said.
“Our doors are open for the community to come in with any queries they have about their home gardens and gardening in general.”
The nursery is teaming with organic products and gardening accessories for your own at home garden, but Leaves & Vines offer services beyond the four walls of the store.
Landscaping and gardening services are on offer for those jobs you can’t do yourself - whether it’s setting up your garden or ongoing maintenance.
They also offer a bob cat and tipper hire and service.
Speaking more on sustainable gardening, Kasey pointed out the importance of knowledge, sharing it and of planning.
“Ask questions and plan; it has to be a think twice, cut once type of situation.
“Get a notebook, take notes and understand that gardening is an evolution and a never-ending process.
“Advice is free and organic gardening and doing it sustainably isn’t as hard or expensive as it may seem.
“We have recently started our new bin system and rather than dumping the food waste in the bin, you could use what you’re able to in your gardens.
“Chemicals are not always the answer.”
One of the great organic products available in store at Leaves & Vines is Charlie Carp, made right here in Deniliquin from the pest fish once removed from the river.
Organic blood and bone is also good if your garden needs a bit of a kick, Kasey said.
As for planning, Kasey says planting at the right time is just as important as what you choose to plant.
Where possible, choose plants endemic to your region.
Understanding the relationship between indigenous plant species and ones we are going to plant around or near them is key to this process.
Leaves & Vines is always active on Facebook, offering hints, tips and tricks for your gardens at home. People are also welcome to pop in store for advice.
The nursery is located at 214 Cressy St, Deniliquin and is open Monday to Saturday.
