The visitor centre is next to a waterway that houses native Australian fish species Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch.
These fish have been bred and raised from the hatchery close to the site of the event, which aims to assist in maintaining healthy fish levels in waterways for generations of fishers to come.
The event is in partnership led by Salvation Army North East Youth Services and the Victorian Fishing Authority, who own the venue. Victoria Police, Boats and More, Wullumbarra and Rumbalara are also partners in the event.
NEYS is a Shepparton-based youth support organisation that has assisted young people with secure housing since 2008.
“We are trying to bring something new for everyone to experience in the area of recreation and responsible fishing, taking advantage of this fabulous new venue for the locals,” said youth homelessness case manager at NEYS, Jim Gow.
“We too often hear that there is nothing to do in the area for young people and we are constantly looking to change that, especially when it comes to putting on new and dynamic events that we haven’t tried before.”
The event is a drug, alcohol, smoke and vape-free event.
