The Victorian Government has announced it will invest $3.5 million to expand the Personal Safety Initiative in the Victorian Budget 2026/27.
The initiative allows victim-survivors to access often costly, but practical and necessary security upgrades for their homes, including stronger doors and locks, alarms, lighting and security cameras.
“Women and children must feel safe at home, which is why these programs are so important,” Victorian Women and Girls Minister Gabrielle Williams said.
Women and children from diverse backgrounds experiencing family violence will gain increased specialist support with the government also announcing $6.4 million of funding from the Strengthening Women’s Safety Package.
The funding is expected to expand access to family violence support for multicultural and multifaith women, women on temporary visas, children and young people, older women, women leaving prison, women with disabilities and gender diverse Victorians.
The aim is for more women to get support, such as food or a place to sleep, when fleeing violence.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan said safety “must be real for every woman”.
“Support must be accessible and it must reach every woman who needs it,” Ms Allan said.
If you are experiencing family violence or believe someone you know is at risk, seek help from police or a support service.
