Ms Thomson established her company to create opportunities for women facing similar circumstances to her past.
“I started Mowing Motivation from a lived experience of domestic violence and to help other women in the same predicament,” Ms Thomson said.
“My business helped me get out of the situation I was in and create my own financial freedom, so that I am never stuck in the predicament again of financial abuse
“I left with nothing, just the clothes on my back and I didn’t want that to happen again.”
Women-led businesses are important and can be an example for other women out there going through similar things.
The all-female gardening and maintenance crew provides services including lawn mowing, weeding, hedging and leaf collection.
Ms Thomson’s inspiration came from her previous work experience.
“In the past, I worked for the shire in the outdoor crew, and someone asked me when I was at my happiest, and I was like, when I was doing that,” she said.
“I am doing this for my kids, to show my kids that if I can do it, they can, they can have a better life.”
Through employment services provider Asuria, Ms Thomson received crucial business mentoring.
“I did a business course with Asuria, where they came to my house and worked through all of the things I needed to do to start a business, things like getting an ABN, insurance and a business plan,” she said.
“They flew me to Sydney and then this time I was nominated for my business through Asuria, as a successful business, and they asked me to be on the TV show.”
Ms Thomson received crucial business mentoring, won the Small Business Start-up award, and will feature on Start Me Up hosted by Liv Phyland, airing on Network 10 on June 28 at 2pm.
