The strategy is now open for community feedback for a period of at least 28 days.
The draft strategy outlines the proactive and strategic approach to environment and climate change and identifies priorities for management for council over the next five years.
Mayor Danny Claridge said it is designed to be realistic, achievable, and adaptable to evolving technologies and resources.
He also expressed his enthusiasm for the strategy, highlighting the importance for council to adopt the Draft Climate and Environment Strategy into the daily running of the organisation and community.
“This draft strategy is a crucial step forward in our commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability within our community,“ Cr Claridge said.
“It outlines the guiding principles and objectives that will shape our approach over the next five years.”
The Climate and Environment Strategy aims to align with the carbon reduction goals established by the Victorian and federal governments.
The Victorian Government has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2045, placing significant responsibilities on local councils to promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability while addressing climate change risks.
“It details the specific actions we will take to mitigate environmental impacts from our operations and to support the broader community in adopting sustainable practices,” Cr Claridge said.
