Founded in the Koondrook-Barham district in 2007, the Lions Australia Junior Public Speaking Competition aims to ensure children are provided the opportunity to develop their public speaking abilities.
They are to write and prepare their own speeches, which are then delivered in front of an audience of their peers, teachers and some invited guests.
Competing schools included the host, Blighty Public School, as well as visiting schools Finley Public School and St Joseph’s Catholic School, Finley.
Students in Years 3 and 4 delivered speeches on the topic ‘Creative Invention’, while those in Years 5 and 6 on ‘Technology’.
All participants impressed the judges with their confidence, clarity, and thoughtful presentations.
The competition was closely contested, with just one point separating the top three finalists — a testament to the high standard of public speaking on display.
In the Year 3 to 4 section, Sebastian Cana from Finley Public and Imogen Harris from Finley St Joseph’s progressed to the next round.
In the older age group, Ruby Delminico and Lucy Loughridge from Finley Public advanced.
Following the speeches, students, parents, and staff enjoyed a shared morning tea, celebrating the students' achievements and strengthening community connections.
