I decided, based on my love for English and writing, that I would like to spend my week at the Pastoral Times to see what journalism looks like in the real world.
After some encouragement and help from Ms (Pam) Sinha, the careers advisor, more than 50 students found a place to spend their work experience.
Ms Sinha has always spoken very highly about the work experience program.
"The aim of work experience is to give our students the opportunity to step into the adult way of life without overworking them,“ she said.
“It gives them a chance to grow their self-confidence but also their self-awareness.
“It exposes them to how to dress and act, and it's often a key point for maturity.”
Ms Sinha said a number of students have this year chosen to explore the trade industry, with hospitality, media, healthcare, childcare, aged care, IT, cosmetics, fitness and education also popular choices.
"What are the benefits? Students get to explore future career path possibilities, and sometimes they have an epiphany and think they want to do this for the rest of their lives.
“Other times they decide that it is not the career that they want to put all their time and energy into.
"It's also good for them to have a taste of an industry without having to apply for a job, to only stay at the job for a few weeks before flaking out because they don't like it."
The experience for me has definitely been interesting.
This week I got to meet NSW Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Regional New South Wales, and Minister for Western New South Wales Tara Moriarty, and also given a tour of the Charlie Carp facility.
I also met NSW Member for Murray Helen Dalton.
Overall, it's been an eye-opening experience. It's not really what I was expecting, despite still being enjoyable.
I would like to hope that many other students throughout the year are also benefiting from the experience by getting to understand the position or industry that they are working in better.
A huge thank you to everyone who hosted, or is hosting, a student for a work placement over the week.
It means a lot for the experience that we all get out of it.
