Cobram Community House (CCH), in conjunction with Moira Shire Council, will be hosting a special Refugee Week event on Thursday, June 22 at its premises on Punt Rd.
The event, which will begin at 10.30am, will comprise of a morning tea and will include guest speaker Wendy Rowan.
Ms Rowan is a local woman who has worked in refugee camps in Mozambique and Nigeria as well as taught English to refugees in the area.
CCH chief executive Christine Osborne said the event was designed to raise awareness of the struggles of refugees.
“The theme for 2023 is ‘finding freedom’. Every day millions of people across the world embark on dangerous journeys in search of safety and freedom,” she said.
“It is difficult for many of us to imagine the fear and conditions that many refugees have experienced.”
CCH is one of the local services that helps support refugees in the area and helps refugees deal with issues such as Centrelink Services, education, information, social connection and referral services.
Mrs Osborne encourages anyone interested to take the time out and visit.
“Come along to Community House at 10.30am on Thursday for morning tea, an interesting speaker and learn a little more about the refugee experience,” she said.
CCH has partaken in Refugee Week celebrations for the past two years.
