Organised by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, the Garribak comedy night will feature an all First Nations line-up of Sean Choolburra, Elaine Crombie and Andy Saunders.
The assembly said Garribak means laugh in Yorta Yorta language and all proceeds will go towards helping First Nations families impacted by the floods.
“It’s devastating to see how the floods have impacted community. Our hearts go out to mob who’ve been affected,” the assembly’s head of engagement and communications Amy Rust said.
“We wanted to do our bit and support them any way we could. Our Garribak event had been planned a few weeks beforehand, so we decided to direct all proceeds to support local mob who’ve had their homes or livelihoods impacted, and we’ll also have an auction on the night to raise even more funds.”
Choolburra has performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow and Edinburgh Fringe Festival, along with performances on stage and screen.
Elaine Crombie has starred in many productions, including Top End Wedding, 8MMM Aboriginal Radio and Black Comedy.
Andy Saunders’ credits include the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Deadly Funny, Adelaide Fringe Festival Aboriginal Comedy All Stars and ABC comedy Up Late TV and Up Early TV.
A fundraising auction will also be held on the night.
The Garribak comedy night will be held at the Rumbalara Football Netball Club on Saturday, November 5. Tickets are free for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders registered on the Aboriginal Electoral roll administered by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria, and cost $22.19 for non-enrollees.
