Caugheys celebrate 60 years of marriage

When Strathmerton's Elsie Munro told her father Eben Munro she was marrying Dennis Caughey on December 6, 1960, he was shocked.

It was harvest time after all. When would he find the time?

Fortunately, when December 6 arrived, so did the rain - and a thunderstorm - so any work on the farm was simply out of the question.

Dennis popping the question two years earlier, to which Elsie said yes, would turn out to be the best decision of their lives.

Sixty years on, the couple celebrated its diamond wedding anniversary under clear skies on Thursday.

Dennis and Elsie Caughey were married in 1960 at the Methodist church in Numurkah.

Dennis’ parents, Fred and Teenie Caughey, owned the Strathmerton newsagency and Elsie worked in the general store.

Elsie and Dennis met when Elsie would buy the newspaper on her way home at lunch time.

“We both played badminton together on the same team,” Dennis said.

“What originally brought us together was the bachelors and spinsters balls, where the men had to invite a lady,” Dennis said.

“One of Elsie's friends said, ‘why don't you ask Elsie Munro?’ and you had to write a proper invitation.”

Dennis said from there, the two of them went dancing together wherever there was a ball.

After marrying, the couple honeymooned at Benalla when motels were just beginning to come in. They then travelled to Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Melbourne and Ballarat.

Together they have three children, Pat, Kathryn, and Craig, and five grandchildren.

Dennis said his 60 years of marriage had been "absolutely amazing".“We've had a wonderful 60 years together,” he said.

The couple enjoyed lunch in Strathmerton to celebrate the anniversary.
