Originally based in Melbourne, Kyle relocated to Shepparton to begin a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology (AUR31120) apprenticeship with Fords Shepparton Bus Services through GOTAFE.
“I was a qualified landscaper, and I was on the machines all the time but didn’t really know how to fix them,” Kyle said.
“They were always breaking down, so I thought, why not get into the trade where I can fix them? I love it — it’s good fun pulling stuff apart and figuring out what to do.”
GOTAFE automotive trainer and assessor Mark Warren praised Kyle’s enthusiasm and commitment.
“Kyle is making a great effort to enhance his knowledge and hands-on skills. He’s keen to learn and does it with a great rapport,” Mark said.
Fords’ Warren Schramm echoed the sentiment, describing Kyle as “hard-working” and commending his positive attitude towards both work and those around him.
Kyle’s dedication to the trade led his employers to nominate him for the prestigious business award — a surprise for the apprentice, but not for those who work alongside him.
An apprenticeship in heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology can lead to a wide range of career pathways, from diesel fitting to advanced diagnostics and supervisory roles.
“Heavy vehicle mechanics are in steady demand due to the critical role of logistics and transport of people and products,” Warren said.
The winners of the 2025 Greater Shepparton Business Excellence Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony in October.
