Facing significant personal challenges and the upheavals of the pandemic, Brett found himself in a dark place, both physically and mentally, weighing in at 100kg.
Simple activities, such as kicking the footy with his son River after school, became daunting due to fatigue, leaving Brett feeling like he was letting down those he cared about the most.
Determined to overcome these challenges, Brett laced up his sneakers one night and embarked on a walk around his neighbourhood, unknowingly initiating an inspiring journey of personal transformation.
Setting a daily goal of 8000 steps, he began with post-work walks, gradually incorporating running into his routine. Joining Shepparton’s parkrun on Saturdays at 8am, with its inclusive atmosphere that “brings the community together”, played a crucial role in his progress, which he recommends to anyone.
What started as a personal challenge transformed over time into an obsession, serving as a lifeline that pulled Brett out of the darkness he had found himself trapped in.
The positive changes in his life manifested in a remarkable 30kg weight loss throughout 2021 and 2022. Witnessing his ex-partner’s battle with bowel cancer and inspired by the dedicated efforts of healthcare professionals at the Peter MacCallum Research Centre, Brett channelled his passion for running into fundraising for charities.
With running a marathon on his bucket list, Brett decided to have a go and secured the support of two local businesses in Seymour.
His first year saw him successfully raise $3500, thanks to the community rallying behind his cause.
Covering an average of 40km per week, running is now integral to Brett’s life; raising funds for charities not only keeps him focused but serves as a constant source of motivation.
Brett enjoys longer-distance runs, particularly half-marathons. His dedication culminated in an impressive third-place finish in Shepparton’s half-marathon last year.
On March 17, Brett will be striking again, participating in Run for the Kids in Melbourne as part of the Good Friday Appeal. This time, his efforts are dedicated to a deeply personal cause: Mia, his colleague’s daughter, is fighting cancer for the second time.
Fuelled by a sense of responsibility, Brett initially aimed to raise $1000 but was astounded by the community’s overwhelming support as he surpassed $2000 within a week.
“I can’t thank people enough for their involvement. I want to give my goals my best effort and don’t want to let people down,” Brett said.
Grateful for the unwavering community support he has received over the years, his commitment to fitness goals extends beyond personal achievements, with a selfless focus on making a positive impact.
“I don’t do this for personal gains; it’s all about making a difference,” Brett said.
For him, running allows him to “help in any way” he can.
