In a fitting tribute to two of the region’s most dedicated volunteers, it recognises nearly six decades of tireless service, leadership, and community spirit.
The couple, who both joined the Blighty Brigade on June 1, 1965, have been instrumental in shaping the culture, capability, and resilience of the brigade through a lifetime of commitment and contribution.
With a legacy of leadership, Geoff’s name has become synonymous with bushfire protection and community leadership throughout the Mid Murray Zone.
Known for his calm demeanour and technical skill, he quickly gained the trust of his peers from his early days on the fire ground.
Throughout his 59 years of service, Geoff played a critical role in responding to countless bush fires and emergencies - often under the most challenging of conditions.
His service extended beyond local boundaries, with Geoff regularly assisting neighbouring brigades in times of need, cementing his reputation as a regional leader.
Driven by a hunger to learn and a passion for service, Geoff completed extensive training and went on to serve in several key brigade roles, including deputy captain, permit officer, and brigade secretary, a post he held for more than a decade before also taking on treasurer.
His behind-the-scenes work in these positions was marked by reliability, precision, and an unwavering commitment to the brigade’s operational health.
In 2014, Geoff was elected group captain for the Conargo Fire District, overseeing coordination across multiple brigades.
He continued to serve as deputy group captain following council amalgamations, providing invaluable stability during structural transitions.
“Geoff’s leadership and support for fellow firefighters, especially younger recruits, have made him a respected mentor and source of guidance across generations,” his citation read.
“His exemplary service has been recognised through numerous awards, including the Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation for his work during the 2019/2020 bushfire season and the NSW RFS Long Service Medal with clasps.
“Geoff’s impact will resonate in the community for years to come.
“As he receives Life Membership, it is a testament not just to his longevity, but to the deep and lasting difference he has made.”
Pauline has been recognised for the important role she plays in “embodying strength behind the scenes”.
Since joining the brigade with her husband in 1965, she has been a quiet force of strength, versatility, and heart.
“Whether actively firefighting or managing essential support roles, Pauline has consistently been ready to serve whenever needed - often side-by-side with Geoff,” her citation read.
“Trained and capable as a firefighter in her own right, Pauline responded to countless local fires and highway emergencies, always with professionalism and grace.
“Her long-standing role as permit officer, held for more than a decade, showcased her attention to detail and strong sense of responsibility.”
However, Pauline’s contributions have gone far beyond the fire ground.
Her hospitality during incidents, dedication to station upkeep, and thoughtful care for her brigade “family” have had a lasting impact.
Known for her legendary cooking and comforting presence, Pauline helped create a sense of belonging within the brigade that sustained members through tough times.
Her initiative in securing a grant to build a verandah over the station’s kitchen is just one example of her forward-thinking approach.
The project not only improved station facilities but also serves as a physical reminder of her enduring legacy.
“With over 40 years of officially recognised service, Pauline's Life Membership is a heartfelt acknowledgment of the countless ways she has supported, shaped, and strengthened the brigade,” the Mid Murray RFS said.
“A partnership in service together, Geoff and Pauline Ford represent the very best of volunteerism - dedicated, humble, and unwavering in their service to others.
“Their combined contributions have left an indelible mark on the Blighty RFS Brigade and the broader community.
“As they are honoured with Life Membership, the entire Mid Murray Zone stands in gratitude, inspired by their example and strengthened by their legacy.”
