Nine Guides and leaders from Benalla joined Guides from Kilmore, Seymour, Shepparton, Wangaratta, Springhurst and Chiltern for the Hume Region activity.
The sun shone for the girls on Saturday following less pleasant weather during the week, and all enjoyed getting a bit wet in the lake.
District Leader Di McKenna said after safety briefings and a bit of practice on which side to paddle, the canoes did some ‘rafting up’, and most pairs had a go at capsizing and swimming their canoe safely to the shore.
“The perseverance and teamwork was fantastic, and some new skills were on show with it being the first time that some of the girls had put on a life jacket,” Ms McKenna said.
Safety first: Jacinta and Erin get kitted out with life jackets by leader Tara Anderson from Girl Guides Victoria.
