Joan and Brendon Smith, who taught at what was Haslem St Primary School between 1962 and 1968, will lead the “invasion” with 20 other caravans on Friday.
Nearly 30 years after leaving Kyabram in 1969, the couple bought a second-hand A’Van Aliner in 1998 after seeing one, out of their price range, at the Melbourne Caravan Show.
A couple of months later — perhaps in a moment of self-described “madness” — they started the A’van Club with an initial membership of 300 from all over Australia.
“The A’Van Club will be in Ky over the last weekend this month, and we were wondering if there may be any local interest in catching up with some of the known locals for a chat,” the couple said.
“Even though many years have passed, we still fondly remember some of our past pupils, like Stuart Anderson and Christine Marshall.”
The Smiths were involved in local activities, including table-tennis, music, tennis and youth groups, and Brendon was a football umpire with the Goulburn Valley Umpires Association.
The couple had three children during their time in Kyabram, and have now been married for over 60 years.
Their club has over 1000 members nationally, and both Joan and Brendon are life members after serving as president and secretary, respectively.
During their excited return to Kyabram, the couple will be staying with their fellow caravanners at the Western Gums Caravan Park over the weekend.
