Offering a deep insight into youth homelessness, The Bridge Youth Services will be screening the 2019 documentary film Life After The Oasis.
The film is a sequel to the 2008 version The Oasis, where a film crew followed the stories of young people experiencing homelessness in Sydney. The Sascha Ettinger Epstein-directed film explores the same subjects 10 years later.
Although filmed in Sydney, The Bridge chief executive Melinda Lawley said there were similar traits to Shepparton and unfortunately there had been little change over the 10 years.
“We thought we would highlight it by showing people the issues for young people when they’re homeless," Mrs Lawley said.
“The stories are the same here in Shepparton. I’ll be explaining this isn’t a Sydney issue but a youth issue.
“Without giving away a spoiler to the film there are some good stories to come out of the film.”
Mrs Lawley said the target audience was people in the community who want to address youth homelessness.
“There’s the issue of the young people who are homeless now but there’s also the opportunity to reduce that number," she said.
“I hope the people who come to the film night are interested in youth homelessness and can advocate for us to reduce the number of young people who come through our service.
“I hope young people come as well so they can see there is some light at the end of the tunnel and advocate.”
The Bridge will also be teaming up with other organisations, include networking activities with Beyond Housing, during Homelessness Week.
Life After The Oasis will be screen at Village Cinemas in Shepparton at 6.30pm on Wednesday, August 7.
Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased on Eventbrite or at The Bridge Youth Services Office at 127 Welsford St, Shepparton.
