Tas jail escapee caught after days on run

"The man who reportedly escaped from prison custody ... has been arrested a short time ago," Tasmania Police said in a statement on Tuesday morning.

"Police would like to thank the Tasmanian community for their assistance and cooperation during the search effort."

Police had earlier raised concerns about Howlett's experience living in the bush and said he may try to acquire supplies.

Police haven't revealed where Howlett was caught. The search involved "significant police resources" including a helicopter. 

Howlett was not considered a threat to the general public.
