A police manhunt continues for the driver who allegedly ran a red light and hit a 12-year-old boy while behind the wheel of an unregistered car in Brisbane.

The boy was struck as he crossed a road on his bike in the southern suburb of MacGregor on Thursday afternoon, leaving him with multiple fractures.

The driver abandoned the car and is believed to have fled through a nearby shopping centre. On Friday, he was still at large amid an ongoing search.

Police said officers noticed the Commodore while doing checks and a police vehicle moved into traffic with its lights activated.

They car allegedly sped away from them, running a light, striking the boy and causing a head injury.

The boy was transported to Queensland Children's Hospital with multiple fractures in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene was declared and Queensland Police's ethical standards unit advised of the incident.
