Elderly pedestrian dies after being struck by car

A man has been charged with drink driving after an elderly pedestrian was struck by a car on the Gold Coast, later dying in hospital.

Police said the man was driving a black Mazda hatchback when he allegedly hit the 83-year-old woman visiting from the United States on Saturday night.

The 30-year-old man allegedly left the scene at Tugun but was found by police inside his car outside a Currumbin home nearby.

"The driver of the vehicle had originally stopped at the incident location and got out of the vehicle with the passenger," Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Tim Mowle told reporters on Monday.

"The passenger remained at the incident scene, however the driver got back in the vehicle and left the scene."

The pedestrian was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition and died on Sunday night.

"She's from America visiting family, she was simply out walking that evening," Supt Mowle said.

The Currumbin man has been issued with a notice to appear for mid-range drink driving in Coolangatta Magistrates Court on March 25.

Supt Mowle said the charge may change as investigations continue.
