Date set for Jane Garrett state memorial

Doors will open at 10am and the service will begin an hour later. Attendees are asked to make contributions to the Smith Family charity in lieu of floral tributes.

The service will be live streamed for those unable to attend.

Ms Garrett died aged 49 in early July, not long after parliament went on a six-week hiatus ahead of the upcoming state election.

A condolence motion will be moved on Wednesday, with the late MP's family expected to be in the public gallery to hear MPs honour her life and contribution to the state.

The mother of three and former emergency services minister was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and was in remission before her cancer recently returned.

The Brunswick and Eastern Victoria MP quit cabinet in 2016 over a controversial firefighters' union pay deal and announced late last year she would not stand for re-election in November.

Her family accepted an offer from the Labor government for a state funeral but Premier Daniel Andrews has said he is unsure whether he will speak at the service.
