Baby's horrific death 'to haunt' emergency personnel

The death of a six-month-old baby will likely "haunt" first responders, a police commissioner says.

Homicide detectives are investigating the infant's death at a home in Balcatta in Perth after emergency services were called to a home about 3am on Monday.

St John WA said multiple crews were sent to the address and a woman in her 30s was taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and a female teenager transported to Perth Children's Hospital.

The death was being treated as a family violence incident, WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said.

"There would be very few cases where you would have a crime scene of such a horrific nature for our officers and all first responders involved," Mr Blanch told reporters on Tuesday.

"And certainly those officers would be entitled to their critical incident leave, but that's something that will most likely haunt them for the rest of their careers."

Family members of the infant are assisting detectives with their inquiries, police said.
