Thinking about a home makeover? Dreaming of the perfect garden? Or simply wanting to declutter and get inspired? Your local GV Library could be your best starting point.
GV Libraries operations manager Jenny Wyllie said the library was a goldmine of ideas for anyone keen on home improvement, sustainability, cooking, decorating and more — without the cost.
“Come in, get the House & Garden magazine, or get the latest books on interior design or landscape gardening … pull your ideas together and then design your own home,” Jenny said.
“We’re a great resource because you don’t want to be going buying a myriad number of books and magazines yourself.”
And it’s not just what’s on the shelves. GV Libraries offer free access to online magazines, eBooks, streaming services like Kanopy and Kids Kanopy, and research tools such as World Book Online for the kids.
“You can actually go to the website, sign up as an online member, and access all of that without ever visiting the library,” she said.
“But of course, we want you to visit us too.”
Signing up is easy — just walk in or join online.
Membership is free and gives you access to everything, including unlimited loans for four weeks at a time, with easy renewals.
“If you haven’t finished with them in four weeks … you can borrow for another four weeks. And another four weeks,” Jenny said.
“Max 12 — unless someone’s waiting on the books.”
Parents at home with young children can also enjoy free programs like Baby Rhyme Time, Story Time and craft activities — all listed on the GV Libraries website.
“It’s more about socialisation and connection … we get regulars coming along who actually make friends. It might be their only outing for the week,” she said.
Tech support is also on hand at “Digital Drop-in” sessions.
“We’re not going to repair your computer,” Jenny added with a laugh.
“But if someone’s given you a phone and you don’t know what to do — we can help.”
One local woman even published a book with ongoing support from these sessions.
GV Libraries cover 10 branches and offer outreach services and book lockers for rural communities.
“If you put a book on hold and can’t pick it up, you’ll get a code for your local locker … so you can go and get it with a single code. How amazing is that?”
So, whether you’re a DIY dreamer, a curious cook, or just need something new to read — start at your local library.
“Talk to the staff, ask questions,” Jenny said.
“We do try and have a good range — and if we don’t have it, we’ll try to get it.”
