Hosted by Allison Trethowan from Find Your Feathers, the workshop invites locals to design and make their own bracelets and necklaces using natural materials such as bark, seed pods, feathers and biodegradable twine. The best part? Every piece is fully compostable.
“There are bracelet and necklace designs participants can learn, or if they wish they can create their own designs,” Allison said.
“This is also a great opportunity for those who may have not bought something for Mum for Mother’s Day yet!”
While jewellery might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about sustainability, this workshop proves it can be.
“Jewellery is part of the fast fashion craze where people are constantly buying new items and throwing out the old, which ultimately adds to the world’s landfill problem,” Allison said.
“The idea of this workshop is that if you no longer want your piece of jewellery, you can pop it in the compost or in amongst the mulch in your garden and it will break down over time and return to the cycle of nature.”
The hands-on session is part of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Activities in the Park program, a year-round initiative that offers free or low-cost activities for all ages and abilities.
“With autumn upon us, we wanted to offer an activity that not only celebrates nature’s textures and colours but also encourages people to consider waste and embrace sustainability through a hands-on creative activity,” council media and communications officer Aaron Lynn said.
The response from the community has already been strong, especially among families and young people looking to engage with sustainability in fun, accessible ways.
“Participants have expressed excitement about being able to create something unique whilst learning about reducing waste and reusing everyday materials in a new and meaningful way,” Mr Lynn said.
The free workshop will be held at the Cussen Park Rotunda, Ross St, Tatura on Sunday, May 11, from 10am to 11.30am.
No need to bring anything — all materials are supplied. Just bring your imagination and a willingness to get a little bit earthy.
