On March 9, the AFL's two most senior office bearers held a brief stand-up at Marvel Stadium, a couple of hours before the official season launch, to give an update on Tasmania and other issues.
There were no big headlines, but what stood out to journalists there was how tired McLachlan appeared.
Normally so self-assured and oozing authority whenever he fronts the cameras, McLachlan looked wrecked.
Fast forward to Tuesday's announcement that he would step down as AFL chief executive at the end of the season.
His wife Laura, their four children and his brother Hamish were all in the front row.
As he read from a prepared statement, McLachlan choked up and had to pause a couple of times as he stifled tears.
Again, this was unprecedented for the tall polo aficianado who famously once made a mustard jacket and peaked cap almost look good.
What was also stark on Tuesday was the contrast in moods between McLachlan and his family.
Even before he became emotional, McLachlan looked stern and anxious as Goyder paid a rich public tribute to him.
Meanwhile, his wife and their children - Edie (14), Cleo (12), Sidney (10) and Luna (five) exchanged smiles and hugs.
They were clearly rapt that they will soon have their husband and Dad back.
"My wife will support me, whatever I did, every day of the week," McLachlan said.
"So she clearly has views, but there's just no greater ally in the world than Laura.
"They are part of the decision-making, no doubt about that.
"This is my call and it's clearly emotional because I'm leaving a big part of my life. But it's the right one."
McLachlan is 49 and will leave the AFL with an excellent CV and a solid reputation.
Whatever the criticisms, the man who oversaw the creation of the AFLW and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic can say he will leave the AFL in better shape than when he took over the role.
He is adamant he does not know what will come next in his professional life.
"Obviously I've had some thoughts. I haven't had a conversation of substance with anyone, really ... it's a blank canvas and that's terrifying, but exhilarating," he said.
Asked what will be waiting for him at home, McLachlan answered: "More space than I probably want.
"It's a seven-day-a-week (job) and I'm keen to not miss my son's basketball game on a Saturday."
