At an age when most players are careful not to look too far ahead, the 32-year-old forward is rapt with how the Hawks' rebuild is progressing under coach Sam Mitchell.
Breust, who impressed with three goals in last Saturday's massive upset win over top side Collingwood, wants to be part of this new Hawks era for as long as possible.
Hawthorn represent a major threat for the sixth-placed Western Bulldogs in Sunday's game at Launceston.
While the Hawks are 16th with only six wins, they have also upset the Brisbane Lions this season and the Collingwood win again showcased their abilities.
"We only have six wins, so we need some perspective on things, but ultimately the way I'm feeling at the moment, the way my body's holding up, the way the group's progressing, there's a lot to like," Breust said of his playing future beyond next season.
"If we're starting to play finals again, I will be trying to look to hang on."
Breust replied "100 per cent" when asked if the rebuild is going better than he expected.
As he and Mitchell said during the week, a key now is developing consistency.
For all the merit in their big scalps this season, the Hawks have suffered from some big lapses, too.
"If we can start to control them, limit them to three-goal runs instead of seven-goal runs, the ladder looks maybe a bit different for us," Breust said.
"We love going down to Tassie. We're looking forward to it."
Likewise, Mitchell wants to see how long the Hawks can maintain what they showed against the Magpies.
"We need to put a full four-quarter performance in and that's been our great challenge," he said.
"We had three out of four quarters in a lot of games this year, but we haven't been able to put four together often enough to make us competitive.
"Can we do eight quarters in a row?"
One of the keys will be captain James Sicily, who tore Collingwood to shreds in a best-afield performance last weekend.
Now Sicily and his fellow defenders come up against a Bulldogs attack boasting Aaron Naughton, Jamarra Ugle-Hagan and Rory Lobb.
All eyes will be on Sicily v Naughton, given the fiery Hawk ripped off his opponent's headband in a game last season.
"The thing he has in his kitbag, which we value enormously, is he sets up our offence as well," Mitchell said of Sicily.
"I'd actually forgotten about the headband-gate. I'm sure they'll match up at some stage.
"We're not going to have a set match up in that way for Naughton.
"We know they have that real three talls in the front end, who can cause any team trouble."
