Shepparton ACE Secondary College is a registered secondary school with a small school community that suits young people who might otherwise be lost in the crowd.
During our 15-year journey in secondary education, we have learnt much from our students.
We have admired their enthusiasm, their energy for important causes, their willingness to help others, and their courage to try experiences outside their comfort zone, such as international travel.
We have observed our students gain confidence in their learning and achieve things they once thought impossible.
Furthermore, we have cheered for them when they made it through Year 12 and went out into the world.
Many previous students have kept in touch with us, and we have followed their career and further study paths.
That is a privilege they have given us.
Our students have also guided the development of the school.
When we needed to move from our first location, we asked the students at the time what size school works best for their learning.
They were very determined that our small school suited them.
We listened to them and relocated to a site in Maude St that fits only 100 young people.
Past students are recommending the school to others.
They are also sending their children here to begin their secondary schooling in the small school environment that made their parents feel welcome so many years before.
Small schools have particular benefits: a strong sense of community and belonging that makes young people more attached to their school; students feel safer in a small school where everyone knows each other; and smaller class sizes enhance engagement in learning.
Our students study the Australian Curriculum, VCE and VET subjects alongside rich extracurricular activities and a camping program that has taken many students to amazing places in Australia as well as overseas — notably Vietnam, Cambodia and Japan.
Our teachers are a talented mix of experts in their fields, career teachers, and young teachers starting out in their chosen profession.
Young people who thrive here understand that we have some traditional values that we hold to: the values of safety, kindness, and responsibility for one’s own actions.
When those values are adhered to, there is no stopping what our students can achieve.
