Returning mum Kerber causes major upset at Indian Wells

"Jelena is a strong opponent, she has played so well this year. I knew I had to play very well," said Kerber.

She used her fourth match point to win against Ostapenko after 2 hours 13 minutes. 

Marketa Vondrousova also advanced, the Wimbledon champion emerged a 6-0 6-2 winner over Bernarda Pera who eliminated Australian Daria Saville in the previous round.

World No.1 Iga Swiatek beat local Danielle Collins 6-3 6-0.
