Kamal Sowah's form for Club Bruges in the Champions League has won him a World Cup call-up for Ghana.

Another surprise call-up to the Black Stars' squad for Qatar on Monday was Racing Lens midfielder Salis Abdul Samed, who is also uncapped.

Striker Sowah, 22, has impressed as the Belgian club reached the last 16 of the Champions League, knocking out Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen in the process.

Samed, also 22, has been a regular for Racing Lens as they have moved to second in the French Ligue 1 standings.

Former Spain international Iñaki Williams and England under-21 international Tariq Lamptey, who threw in their lot with Ghana two months ago, were both included by coach Otto Addo but Ghana failed to persuade England international Callum Hudson Odoi to switch allegiance

Inaki's brother Nico, also a forward for Athletic Bilbao, will be in Qatar too, in the Spanish squad.

They will be repeating the feat of the Boateng brothers, who played for different nations in 2010 in South Africa and in 2014 in Brazil. Jerome Boateng was a central defender with Germany, while the older Kevin-Prince Boateng was an attacking midfielder with Ghana.

The Boatengs, who played against each other in both tournaments, were born to a Ghanaian father and were raised by separate mothers in Germany. The Williams brothers were born in Spain from Ghanaian parents who made a long journey to Europe looking for a better life.

Spain and Ghana are in different groups in Qatar, so the Williams brothers won't be able to play against each other at least until the quarterfinals.

"Hopefully it will happen," Iñaki Williams said, "and that Ghana wins..."

"We'll see about that," Nico Williams said. "But for sure we will be exchanging shirts after the match."

Addo was forced to name three inexperienced goalkeepers after Ghana's first two choices – Jojo Wollacott from Charlton Athletic and South Africa-based Richard Ofori – were ruled out. Wollacott was injured in the warm-up for a League One match at Burton on Saturday,

The 26-man squad will be captained by Dede Ayew, who was part of the team that reached the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010 – only the third time an African nation has reached the last eight of a World Cup.

The Black Stars face Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in Group H.
