An eighth win in nine games on Monday pushed Thiago Motta's side to within two points of third-placed Juventus and the victory assumed even greater significance when Roma could only draw 0-0 at Lecce.
Roma are fifth in the table with 52 points, five points behind Bologna in fourth place, the final guaranteed Champions League qualifying spot.
Roma's best effort, from Houssem Aouar, was kept out by a great reaction save from Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone.
Earlier, Bologna had little trouble securing a 3-0 victory at home against bottom-of-the-league Salernitana.
Riccardo Orsolini opened the scoring with a tremendous left-foot shot from outside the box and Alexis Saelemaekers doubled their leadd.
Left-back Charalampos Lykogiannis completed the scoring in stoppage time.
The result meant an unhappy debut for Salernitana coach Stefano Colantuono, the club's fourth coach this season.
Salernitana looks doomed to spend next season in the second tier. With eight games remaining, they are 11 points from safety.
Salernitana face Sassuolo on Friday in a relegation six-pointer  made all the more urgent after Sassuolo surrendered a lead at home to Udinese.
Gregoire Defrel opened the scoring for Sassuolo but Florian Thauvin equalised within three minutes.
Two other teams in the relegation fight, Cagliari and Verona, drew 1-1.
Verona took the lead through Federico Bonazzoli but Ghanaian midfielder Ibrahima Sulemana levelled.
