* Key moment: It doesn't get much better than this. Just as the message must have come through to Graham Arnold's bench about Tunisia taking a 1-0 lead over France, Australia put their destiny back in their own hands. Released on the counter, Riley McGree burst down the left wing and slipped through Mat Leckie. Still with plenty to do, the veteran Socceroo powered forward and sent Joakim Maehle through a spin cycle, cutting right then back onto his left before coolly shooting into the bottom corner.
* Player of the match: On a day when the Socceroos defended admirably but largely looked lethargic, Leckie's energy all game stood out. The winger was outstanding as he attacked time and time again, pulled off a couple of lovely passes and then scored the most wonderful of counter-attacking goals. He could have some competition, though, from big Harry Souttar, who again marshalled Australia's defence with aplomb, repelling attacks time and time again. The towering central defender was simply immense.
* Stats that matter: SIX. The Socceroos' tally of six points (two wins, one loss) in Qatar is their most ever in a World Cup group stage and the first time they have secured two wins at one World Cup. Australia's previous best was four points in Germany 2006, which is when the Socceroos last progressed to the knockouts. Australia also had to nervously bide their time through six minutes of added time.
* Quote of the day: "This is my third World Cup now and I've had my chances in previous World Cups to score, wasn't meant to be. My first World Cup (goal) is probably one of the most important goals for me and for the team." - Leckie on that goal.
* What's next: The Socceroos' round of 16 game will be on Saturday, December 3 in Qatar (6am Sunday December 4 AEDT) - when they will take on Lionel Messi's Argentina, who beat Poland 2-0 to top Group C. The Poles finished second, while Mexico were third after beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in the group's other match on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT).
