Western Australia opener Sam Whiteman has fallen just short of notching his maiden double ton after being swept up in South Australia's fightback in the Sheffield Shield match at the WACA Ground.
In reply to South Australia's 299, WA went to tea on day three at 7-412 in their first innings, giving them a lead of 113 with four sessions remaining in the match.
Whiteman was caught behind for 193 off 394 balls during the middle session when he unleashed a wide slash in a bid to increase WA's run rate.
His dismissal was part of a collapse of 7-91 as WA went from 0-308 to 7-399.
Despite the flurry of wickets, WA remain in the box seat.Â
The Redbacks suffered an injury blow midway through the day when paceman Jordan Buckingham damaged his right wrist diving to save a boundary.
Buckingham was left writhing in pain after sliding awkwardly over the wrist.
He was assessed by medical staff on the boundary for several minutes before the decision was made to take him off.
Cameron Bancroft (135) was the only batsman to fall during a hard-fought morning session that yielded just 69 runs for WA.
Bancroft departed when he chopped Wes Agar (2-84) onto his stumps.
His 308-run partnership with Whiteman was WA's fifth highest opening stand in first-class cricket.
Mike Veletta and Geoff Marsh still hold the record after putting together a mammoth 431-run partnership against South Australia at the WACA during the 1989/90 season.
Whiteman's previous highest Shield score of 176no came against Tasmania last November, a score he surpassed soon after lunch on Sunday.
