Officials are hopeful of some play on the final day of the first Ashes Test after rain washed away the opening session at Birmingham.

Covers remained on the Edgbaston pitch throughout Tuesday morning, prompting officials to call an early lunch at 12.30pm.

But the rain has eased significantly leading to the covers being removed from the wicket square at the start of the interval. A further inspection will take place at 1.20pm.

No further rain is forecast for Birmingham on Tuesday, with play set to be reduced to 73 overs for the day if play was to start at 2pm.

Overs will be lost at the rate of one every four minutes from that point on.

When play does resume, Australia will need 174 more runs for victory and England seven wickets after the tourists went to stumps on day four at 3-107 chasing 281.

Usman Khawaja is not out 34 after his first-innings 141, with nightwatchman Scott Boland alongside him on 13.

There is no limit to how late the match can go on to complete the allotted overs as long as it remains light enough, with sunset in Birmingham not expected until 9.30pm.
