Independent MPs matter
Tuesday saw the Federal Government lose a legislative vote on the floor of Federal Parliament for the first time in about 80 years.
The bill in question, proposed by Independent MP Kerryn Phelps, aims to make it easier to bring unwell asylum seekers from Manus Island and Nauru to Australia for treatment.
They would then be sent back once they’re healthy enough.
Whether you agree with this particular policy proposal or not, it makes things very clear — Independent MPs can have a real impact on decisions made in Canberra. Even after just three months in the job.
