I’m just one of 65 students getting a taste of numerous types of industries that interest us.
Some students have chosen to work in pharmacies and allied health, agriculture, childcare and other education, vet clinics, beauty, engineering, construction trades, automotive and hair dressing.
Careers teacher Deb White said one student is even completing their placement as Finley High principal Jeff Ward’s personal assistant.
“The program is invaluable for students to gain first-hand experience of the working world,” Miss White said.
“It allows them to try an occupation and speak directly with people working in that industry, which can really help either consolidate their future career plans or allow them to gain an insight which may help rule out certain options.
“We would like to thank all the local employers for hosting students as without their support this program cannot run.”
While most students have chosen to remain in the local area, some have decided to work further afield.
Some have gone to neighbouring Deniliquin, like myself, while others have gone to Kangaroo Flat, Cobram, Richmond and Yarrawonga in Victoria.
One student has gone as far as Palmerston in the Northern Territory.
For my placement, I have chosen to work with the team behind the Southern Riverina News and the Deniliquin Pastoral Times.
It’s a great opportunity for me and it really gives an insight of whatit’s like writing for a newspaper.
What I really like about the media industry is that it incorporates writing and photography, which I really love.
I have some friends working in aged care, retail and veterinary service and they seem like they are having fun as well.
Thank you to Miss White and Jennifer Philpot for giving us the opportunity, and to the businesses hosting us.
