Murray River Council’s leadership will remain unchanged after Mayor Chris Bilkey and Deputy Mayor Nikki Cohen were re-elected on Tuesday, December 14.

The mayoral election took place at the first meeting of the new council following NSW’s local government elections on December 4.

Cr Bilkey said he was honoured to once again be elected as mayor.

“To represent the residents of Murray River Council is a privilege, but representing our council as mayor is truly an honour,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to working with my fellow councillors and the community to deliver our new community strategic plan, new initiatives and to continue to provide the services and infrastructure our community needs and deserves.

“Murray River Council is really progressing with positive momentum in many areas, so it’s a great time to be part of the council team.”

The mayoral positions will be up for election again in 2023.

The newly elected councillors were also sworn in at the meeting; Cr Ann Crowe and Cr Neil Gorey in the Greater Wakool Ward, Cr Frank Crawley, Cr Nikki Cohen and Cr Chris Bilkey in the Moama Ward, and Cr Thomas Weyrich and Cr Kron Nicholas in the Greater Murray Ward.

A by-election will be held early in 2022 to fill the vacant seats in Greater Murray and Greater Wakool wards.
