Redbacks resist young Blues in Shield

Two quick wickets after lunch have put a dampener on NSW's solid start in their must-win Sheffield Shield match against South Australia in Adelaide.

After reaching 1-82 on the back of a strong opening session, NSW are now 3-146 at tea on a testing Karen Rolton Oval pitch.

Acting skipper Jason Sangha is unbeaten on 43, with Lachlan Hearne not out 14.

Having lost Ryan Hackney for a duck, newcomer Blake Nikitaris and Matthew Gilkes looked solid in a 73-run stand.

But debutant Nikitaris fell in the first over after the break, caught off the bowling of Liam Scott for 44.

Gilkes then followed for 41 when Jordan Buckingham secured an edge to second slip for his first wicket for the Redbacks.

NSW went into the contest with a hugely inexperienced batting line-up having made four enforced changes from last week's side that drew against Western Australia.

Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques, Kurtis Patterson and Hayden Kerr are all missing in a match NSW must win to secure a top-two finish and a spot in next week's season decider.
