The Picola & District Football Netball League yesterday announced it was working toward a July 11 start date, but the Murray Football League is yet to make any form announcements.
Its executive and clubs will meet again on June 8 to determine the latest advice.
In the meantime, Murray FNL general manager Dale Norman is encouraging clubs to be prepared and resume training under restrictions.
‘‘Clubs need to ensure they are in compliance with all guidelines imposed by the state government, AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria and be confident that when the season does indeed go ahead, are well prepared to meet the protocols to ensure the safety of everyone involved,’’ Norman said.
‘‘Any future decisions will be made in conjunction with protocols released by the governing body.
‘‘The league’s number one priority remains the safety and wellbeing of supporters, players, umpires, officials, volunteers and the community.’’
The Rams’ seniors have had three training sessions so far, two last week and once this week.
‘‘Our boys have really enjoyed training together again, getting the Sherrin in their hands,’’ Rams senior coach Sam Hall said.
‘‘We are doing non-contact drills and letting players come up with a different drill and lead the team in it to get a taste for what coaching is like.
‘‘All the team members follow them and listen well, at the moment we’re just having fun at training.
‘‘We’re doing some general fitness but really it’s about building team moral and happy to be back on the oval.
‘‘We’re just hoping for an answer soon from the league.’’
Netball coach Amelia Seignior said the senior netballers are erring on the side of caution for now.
‘‘We found that Netball New South Wales and Netball Victoria restrictions were too difficult to ensure all our players’ health and safety, which is our main concern.
‘‘We remain eager to take the court and will decide on a return to training once restrictions ease further.’’
Rams Netball coordinator Meagan Rodda said some juniors have been on the court, but others are waiting for firmer details to make their return.
‘‘Our Under 13s side is back at training under strict guidelines but our 15s and 17s are yet to return,’’ Rodda said.
‘‘Unlike the football league which has insurance included for the players, our netballers don’t want to pay extra just to train for the season to be cancelled.
‘‘We are looking at the possibility of joining the Deniliquin Netball Association spring competition if the winter season is cancelled.’’
