Played at Tongala, the match could have gone either way, with a final score of 78-75 almost as close as it gets.
Despite winning less sets, Tongala managed to find its way to victory, with big performances across the court getting it over the line.
Tongala captain Corey Nexhip said it was always an exciting occasion to win a grand final.
“We knew it was going to be tight going into it, we hadn’t played Tatura Storm with a full-strength team, nor had they played us with a full-strength team either, so it could have definitely gone either way,” Nexhip said.
“I think the result showed that with the three-game difference in the end, but it was very exciting to come away with that close-fought win.”
Nexhip said his side knew going into the match it had to perform well across the men’s, women’s and combination games.
“Thankfully our men got up by quite a good margin and our women went down, so we knew it was going to be clutch going into the mixed,” he said.
“We always back ourselves with our mixed combinations.”
He said a solid 8-2 win from Damian Brennan and Abbey Nexhip helped settle Tongala’s nerves, with the match helping to make a difference in the result.
Nexhip himself put on a good showing, winning 6-1 in his singles rubber, before combining with Brennan for an 8-5 win and Lori Johnstone for an 8-6 victory.
“It’s always good to go out on the court and perform well,” he said.
“I’m happy with how I went for the day and just glad that the team got over the line.”
