Urgent warning issued as measles cases climb

Measles cases in Australia have tripled in two years. Check your vaccination status now.

The Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit is urging residents to check their measles vaccination status following a significant rise in cases across Victoria and Australia.

Measles cases have increased dramatically over the past two years, with 57 cases reported in Australia in 2024, rising to 181 in 2025.

So far in 2026, 56 cases have been reported, including 17 in Victoria.

LMPHU clinical unit head Dr Simon Crouch said measles was significantly more infectious than COVID-19 and could spread quickly where vaccination coverage was incomplete.

“Two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine provides the best way to ensure immunity,” he said.

Community members are being advised to:

– Check their vaccination history through the Australian Immunisation Register or with a GP

– Book a catch-up MMR vaccination if unsure or not fully vaccinated

– Seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as a fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes or a rash.

Adults born between 1966 and 1992 are at increased risk, as they may have received only one dose.

People born overseas are also at higher risk of being under-immunised.

Dr Crouch said it was safe to receive an additional MMR dose even if vaccination records were missing or uncertain.

The MMR vaccination is also available through local healthcare providers for eligible people, although an administration or consultation fee may apply.
