Emergency relief centre aids fire evacuees in Shepparton

Seven people and two dogs who had been displaced in the region’s fires stayed overnight at an Emergency Relief Centre in Shepparton on Friday, January 9.

The centre was set up in the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds in direct response to the Yarroweyah and Longwood fires that had seen people being told to evacuate.

Only one person remained at the centre overnight on Saturday, January 10.

Greater Shepparton City Council chief executive officer Fiona Le Gassick said others had come into the centre on Friday afternoon and Friday night, but had returned home when evacuation warnings were lifted for the Yarroweyah fire that night.

Over the weekend, about 30 people were triaged through the centre, with most people from fire-affected areas being given help with gaining access to the emergency relief payment that was announced by the Victorian and Federal Governments.

The team at the relief centre had also spent time connecting people who needed help with services to help provide them with food and clothing.

The centre closed on Sunday, January 11 due to a reduced demand for the services.
