The annual week encourages Australians to reflect on the vital role water plays in our lives and to become champions of conservation in homes, schools and workplaces.
This year’s theme is centred on water-wise living, through three key events: Let’s Grow Waterwise Gardens, Water Night, and the Water Week School Competition.
Goulburn Valley Water managing director Steve Capewell said the program aimed to reach people of all ages and backgrounds.
“Water Week is a powerful reminder of how essential water is to our daily lives, and how easy it is to take it for granted,” Dr Capewell said.
“We’re proud to be part of a national movement that’s helping people become more mindful of their water use.”
The week will begin with Let’s Grow Waterwise Gardens, a free event at 7pm on Tuesday, October 21 at Riverlinks Eastbank, Welsford St, Shepparton.
The evening will explore how communities can become more resilient and sustainable through smarter water use, featuring guest speakers Louise Costa, landscape architect, and Cathy Oliver, Euroa Arboretum development manager.
Tickets are free via the Goulburn Valley Water website, with a live-stream also available at gvwater.vic.gov.au/livestream-lets-grow-2025
On Thursday, October 23, households across the region are encouraged to take part in Water Night — a national initiative run by the Water Conservancy — by turning off all non-essential taps between 5pm and 10pm.
The event encourages people to reflect on how often they use water without thinking.
Last year, 200 homes registered, and organisers are hoping to see even more families, schools, sporting clubs and community groups join in this year.
Prizes will be awarded to those who generate the most registrations.
Rounding out the week, local students are participating in the Water Week School Competition, designing colourful toilet paper wraps that promote water literacy and conservation messages.
Dr Capewell said National Water Week was a chance for everyone to get involved.
“It’s about celebrating the value of water and helping build a more water-wise future,” he said.
